The enrichment plantations have various functions, depending on the typology of the area and the surroundings. In some cases, they allow density to be increased in areas with reduced cover, increasing the carbon sink capacity, reducing soil erosion, and guaranteeing tree development in the short term. In other cases, the plantations increase the productive capacity of the stand, by including species that produce high quality wood. In all cases, diversification improves the adaptation of the stands to climate change.
The project includes three plantations with different objectives:

Densification of post-fire zones in the Vall de Rialb
Pla de l’Oliva (Baronia de Rialb)
The 1994 fire in the Vall de Rialb reduced the black pine forest. Years later, regeneration has been good in some places and poor in others. Oak groves have partially replaced the black pine forest on sunny slopes, near the Rialb reservoir.
A 2-hectare oak forest has been selected, which includes laurestine, black pine, and some service trees, and the enrichment planting has been undertaken utilising the same species that are occasionally present, black pines and service trees. It is hoped that this will improve carbon fixation and increase the diversity of the area.

Increased production and diversification of Aleppo pine forests in the Serres d’Ancosa
Clos Costela (la Llacuna)
Around a wine-growing zone and to diversify the Aleppo pine forest, a 1.5-hectare plantation has been implemented, near the fields as well as within them.

Can Sabater de Puigcaní and Can Santacana (Mediona)
After selective felling, a 4-hectare stand has been planted to improve the productive capacity of the stand.
In both cases, planting has been carried out in existing clearings or openings in the Aleppo pine forest, as well as in areas with no trees and old crop fields. Various species have been used, depending on the localised microstation: service trees, strawberry trees, pomegranates, pear trees, cherry trees, walnut trees, ashes, maples, oaks, and European nettle trees.
Prior to planting, the area has been selectively cleaned where the trees have been planted, and the soil prepared in order to break it up and facilitate manual planting and the settling in of the seedlings. Subsequently, 1.2 m-mesh protectors have been positioned around each plant.
