Agroforestry plantation in other LUs to increase stand production and carbon fixation, and improve the landscape biodiversity of the area

Agroforestry plantations are combinations of agricultural crops and trees in the same space, to make more efficient use of the available resources (water, light, nutrients, and soil) throughout the year. The also seek to encourage positive interactions between the agricultural and forestry components: the trees promote a microclimate that is more favourable to the crop (less wind, more humidity, less extreme temperature), amd the leaflitter provider organic matter and nutrients. At the same time, the trees also benefit from agricultural fertilisation. The two components are managed independently.

Modern agroforestry has shown advantages over conventional agriculture in terms of higher prodictivity, with gains of 20-40% measured in equivalent area, increased carbon fixation, filtration of agricultural leachate, reduced erosion, and improved biodiversity. On the other hand, the social and landscape advantage are also important, as the systems are cleaner and sustainable, with an important aesthetic value.

The project involves two very different agroforestry plantaions: the first includes the planting of fast-growing trees, such as black poplars; the second has slower-growing trees for producing good-quality timber.

Can Buscastell (Maçanet de la Selva)

The design and study of the agroforestry plantation will be based on the monitoring of three stands, involving a total of 11 ha:

  • One part where there will be only crops, to be decided between corn, rye-grass, and oat.
  • Another part that is strictly for agroforestry: the chosen crop plus the poplar plantation.
  • A third area that will involve only a forest plantation of the chosen poplars.

Planting and sowing will take place in the coming months.

Can Català (Sabadell)

The design will be developed from the visits that will be made in February to prepare the plants for the coming autumn, across 5.7 ha that combine irrigated areas with areas that have a natural water supply.

Temporal changes in Mediterranean forest ecosystem services are driven by stand development, rather than by climate-related disturbances
