The northern part of the unit is a dense mountainous structure, mostly situated between the altitudes of 500 and 1,000 m, with an average slope of close to 30%.<\/p>\n<p>This area is clearly forest, with few limitations for tree growth. The green of the pines is notable and the forest forms an almost continuous mantle interrupted only by the rocks that, in certain places, are very compact and form scarps. Within this zone, we should distinguish between the area corresponding to forest (32%) and that attributed to shrubland and meadows (38%).<\/p>\n<p>To the west of the Llobregat river there is a fairly overwhelming domain of sclerophyllous forest, specifically cork oaks or mixed cork and holm oak forests. The undergrowth includes plants typical of holm oak forests, together with heliophytes that are able to grow thanks to the relatively light-rich environment afforded by the sparse canopies of the Shrubland, scrub and forest predominate, in addition to fields in the flatter areas.<\/p>\n<p>The vegetation occupies a large part of the territory, some 71.55%. The majority of this is composed of Aleppo pine woodland, secondary forests that have taken over from holm oaks and sessile oaks, and which, generally, cover the It is included in the Natural Biogenetic Reserve \u201cPian Parrocchia-Campo di Mezzo\u201d (established in 1977).<\/p>\n<p>The forest, with beech (<em>Fagus sylvatica<\/em>) as dominant species, covers an area of 667 ha, totally included in Special Protection Zones (ZPS, 79\/409\/CEE) and in Sites of Community Importance (SIC, 92\/43\/CEE). Since 1996, the forest hosts also a site of the Italian network of the forest ecosystem monitoring (CONECOFOR), part of the of the UN\/ECE International Cooperative Programme of Forests (ICP Forests,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.icpforest.org\/\">http:\/\/www.icpforest.org<\/a>) that, in 2009- 2010, was monitored under LIFE+ FutMon (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.futmon.org\/\">http:\/\/www. futmon.org<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The forest has a long tradition of forest management: the basic rules applied are\u00a0<em>moderate thinning from below<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>mixed thinning<\/em>, repeated every 20 years, while stand regeneration is by group shelterwood system. Generally, an amount of 700-1000 m3 of wood is extracted per intervention, over 10 to 15 ha.\u00a0 The forest management is carried out by the Ufficio Territoriale Carabinieri per la Biodiversit\u00e0 (UTCB) of Vittorio Veneto.<\/p>\n<h3>Test area description<\/h3>\n<p>The Experimental area selected for LIFE+ CLIMARK lies in a beech high forest compartment aged 120 to 145 years, at an altitude ranging from 1100 m to 1200 m a.s.l.. Currently, the age of final cutting is being shifted to a not-definite (at now) stand age, to match the emerging recreational, landscape and climate change mitigation functions. Site parameters (elevation, position, soil, rainfall amount and pattern) are optimal for beech growth and such conditions allow the prolongation of standing crop permanence time (rotation length).<\/p>\n<p>An area of 35 hectares, divided into nine (plus one) compartments, was devoted to the management trials of LIFE + ManFor C.BD. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.manfor.eu\/\">www.manfor.eu<\/a>). Three options were identified and randomly assigned in three replicates to the compartments (1 to 9). A cluster of three permanent circular sampling plots was established within each compartment according to a systematic design to survey measuring parameters (species, dbh, height, tree position, social rank, crown projections, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>The three management options proposed for the Cansiglio site were:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Customary (local):<\/strong> the traditional management which consists in\u00a0<em>moderate thinning from below<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>mixed thinning<\/em>, while stand regeneration is by group shelterwood system. Tree selection was performed by UTBC personnel under the guidance of LIFE+ ManFor C.BD. staff;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Innovative:<\/strong> consisting of the identification of a non-fixed number of scattered, well-shaped trees (usually in the predominant-dominant social classes) and crown thinning of neighbouring competitors to promote better growth of selected trees at crown, stem and root level in the future.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Delayed intervention:<\/strong> delay intervention at a later stage that in the context of beech high forest management has reasons to be tested because of its wide application in Italy (e.g. in National Parks, Reserves).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>An additional area (not replicated) has been set-up as the first-ever implemented \u2018ageing patch\u2019 (literally from French \u2018\u00eelot de s\u00e9nescence\u2019). La zona de Lorenzago di Cadore forma part d\u2019una de les zones de protecci\u00f3 especial m\u00e9s extenses dels Alps (ZPE IT3230089 \u00abDolomites de Cadore i Comelico\u00bb) i cont\u00e9 dos llocs d\u2019import\u00e0ncia comunit\u00e0ria (LIC, 92\/43\/CEE). Els boscos de Lorenzago han obtingut el certificat PEFC per la gesti\u00f3 forestal sostenible.<\/p>\n<h3>Descripci\u00f3 de l\u2019\u00e0rea d\u2019assaig<\/h3>\n<p>El lloc seleccionat en el projecte LIFE+ ManFor C.BD. es troba en un bosc mixt de con\u00edferes (avet blanc, 51\u00a0%; avet roig, 46\u00a0%; l\u00e0rix europeu, 2\u00a0%; faig, 1\u00a0%) d\u2019edats diferents, situat entre 925 i 1.220\u00a0m per sobre del nivell del mar i gestionat tradicionalment mitjan\u00e7ant el\u00a0<em>sistema de selecci\u00f3<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Els assaigs de gesti\u00f3 forestal es van dur a terme a 25 hect\u00e0rees i es van aplicar dues opcions de gesti\u00f3 diferents, que s\u2019exposen a continuaci\u00f3:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Tradicional (local):<\/strong> cada n anys la pr\u00e0ctica inclou, simult\u00e0niament: i) l\u2019arrossegament dels arbres madurs; ii) l\u2019aclarida del nivell intermedi; iii) la tala progressiva dels costats al voltant de les parcel\u00b7les de regeneraci\u00f3 definides per afavorir-ne el bon creixement; iv) la tala dels troncs defectuosos i la destrucci\u00f3 completa dels arbres. El sistema de transport amb cavalls que es feia servir en el passat permetia arrossegar els arbres madurs dispersos amb freq\u00fc\u00e8ncia; avui l\u2019\u00fas de tractors facilita l\u2019arrossegament, per\u00f2 d\u2019alguna manera cal concentrar les tales en el s\u00f2l.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Innovadora:<\/strong> actualment l\u2019arrossegament d\u2019uns quants arbres madurs i l\u2019aclarida dels arbres de dimensions interm\u00e8dies s\u2019organitza en grups petits i permet intervencions m\u00ednimes gr\u00e0cies a la collita mecanitzada. Les pr\u00e0ctiques innovadores s\u2019han aplicat obrint vies de desforestaci\u00f3 amb una longitud de 60\u00a0m (1\u00bd al\u00e7ada m\u00e0xima) i una amplada de 20\u00a0m (\u00bd al\u00e7ada m\u00e0xima). Aquestes \u00abaclarides lleugeres\u00bb tenen una orientaci\u00f3 NO-SE. S\u2019afavoreixen els arbres de fulla gran i la regeneraci\u00f3 jove a les vies i, a continuaci\u00f3, s\u2019alliberen.
