The stone pine is a typically Mediterranean tree that occupies some 30,000 ha of the Catalan region, almost always growing on acidic and sandy soils. Even though the Mediterranean pine nut is an economically highly valued nut at an international level, both for its flavour and its nutritional properties, in Catalonia there are practically no plantations dedicated to this forestry product.
In recent years, work has been done on selecting trees from different origins that are particularly good pine cone producers, with the aim of propagating them by grafting and quickly obtaining abundant pine nut production. Stone pine grafts can be made using stone pine (Pinus pinea) or Aleppo pine (P. halepensis) rootstock, and the graft can either be undertaken using an existing plantation, or a plant previously grafted in a nursery can be planted.
Based on this productive idea and the mitigating capacity of the plantations, two different proposals are put forward in the project:

Cal Geli de Busquerós (Capmany)
Planting of a cultivated field with different grafted stone pine clones, to scientifically monitor which are the best adapted and which are the best pine-nut producers, partially inoculated with Tuber borchii. The surface area of the stand is 1 hectare.
A 6×6 planting frame is established and prior clearing and backhoeing of the holes is required.

Les Gatelletes (Aiguamúrcia)
In this area there will be mixed planting in around 1 hectare, one part planted with stone pine and the other with Aleppo pine, to assess the ideal pattern according to survival, growth, and pine nut production.
In spring, the grafting will be undertaken in the nursery and then, in autumn, the planting will be carried out on the ground.
